As a frequent traveler, I am blessed to be able to travel the world. My passport represents my curiosity to explore the world. However, I didn’t always have the opportunity to travel as kid growing up in South Central Los Angeles. My parents have always been hard working and did their very best to ensure that I had all my necessities (we were rich by our own standards). I was always appreciative but I always knew that there is a huge world out there. As early as middle school, I knew I wanted to explore the world. While my peers were discussing the latest Jordan shoes, I was learning about the diversity of the Caribbean. While my friends were taking their girlfriends out on dates , I was saving money for my passport. I was poor financially but rich with passion to travel the globe.
As I pursued higher education, my passion for travel continued to grow. However, my travels were not for vacation and mere pleasure. I traveled to support and reunite with my family. While in college, I would utilize my winter breaks to visit my family in Panama. My dad would always offer to help me but the standard of living in Panama is different from the United States. I would always reassure him that I had it under control. I would even send him remittances to remind him how much I cared for him. It wasn’t always easy but I always found a way to soar like a young bird leaving the nest.
The more I traveled, I realized that travel was more than just a hobby. Traveling is a lifestyle that is not limited just for wealthy people. The more I traveled, the more I would hear comments such as, “Save your money and stop wasting it traveling”. That didn’t stop me and I felt like the peace of mind I get from traveling is worth more than any money in the world. I remember traveling to North Dakota in the freezing winter (beyond brick outside) to meet family members for the first time. I would also travel to Shreveport, Louisiana to spend time with my maternal grandmother. The memories were invaluable! I still remember my mother and grandmother shouting with excitement after winning at the Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City, Louisiana (Rest in Power grandma). There is no amount of money that would suffice for the value of these moments.
I am here to tell you that wealth is not needed to see the world. I came from the bottom and I still realized my dream of traveling the globe. With passion, patience, and perseverance, all things are possible. Never let anyone tell you otherwise because your wings and passion will propel you to reach new heights.
